Interpreting

What is it?

Interpreting is the conversion of information from one language to another in speech form. It is almost always conducted through one person and in one language pair at a time. There are various types of interpreting to suit different client needs as well as settings.

Types of interpreting

Consecutive

Person 1 speaks in language A while the interpreter listens and takes notes. The interpreter then produces the equivalent in language B for Person 2 and vice versa.

Ideal for medium to large gatherings and presentations. No additional equipment required unless a microphone is needed for the interpreter

Dialogue

Dialogue interpreting is consecutive used in smaller settings, usually with two speakers. A more informal arrangement, speech is interpreted in a quick, back-and-forth fashion, often without much need for notetaking.

Suitable for 1-1 interviews and meetings. Often used in 'community' settings with police and healthcare professionals.

Liaison

Liaison refers to a style of interpreting whereby the interpreter accompanies the client throughout their day to assist with communication at events, meetings, working lunches and other scenarios. Both whispered and dialogue may be used.

Ideal for visitors who need smooth communication and a good impression.

Simultaneous

Also known as conference interpreting. The interpreter sits in an isolated booth and all listeners have a headset. The interpreter listens to the speaker through their own headset and interprets what they hear for listeners with almost no delay.

Commonly used in settings with a large audience and a single speaker, such as parliaments, summits and conferences.

Whispered

Whispered interpreting, also known as chuchotage, is a 1-1 or 1-2 version of simultaneous whereby the interpreter stands close the client and quietly interprets the speech of the person speaking with them directly into their ear and at almost exactly the same time.

Perfect for guided visits, 1-1 meetings and liaison schedules.

Remote

Remote interpreting is the use of consecutive through either a video call or telephone call between two or three speakers. Ideal for conversations with customers, business partners and suppliers.

Telephone calls can take place over a normal landline or mobile call and video calls can be taken over Skype, Zoom, or a program of your choosing.
